You must remember the scene from the movie Deewar in which Amitabh Bachchan gets shot in the chest but the badge in his pocket saves him because the bullet hits the badge, and nothing happens to Vijay, the character played by Amitabh. There have been many such incidents in real life too, in which sometimes a coin, sometimes an iPhone or a purse saved a person’s life. But in Mexico, a person’s life was saved by vape, i.e. e-cigarette, when a driver was shot while passing through a violent drug cartel blockade.
Last week, while the driver was driving, gang members tried to stop him, but he put his foot down. He later told police that while fleeing, the man heard gunfire but kept running. But when he stopped at a car wash for help, he was shocked to see that a bullet had ripped through the door of his car, a Nissan Versa, and hit the vape in his trouser pocket.
He showed police the shattered remains of the device, with the bullet still lodged in it. Local media in Culiacan, Sinaloa, say that if he had put it in another pocket, the bullet would have gone straight through his leg and groin, according to the Daily Star.

Sinola is home to one of the most violent drug cartels that run Mexico’s drug industry. Rival gangs feel the cartel is weakened. Its leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was recently arrested, leading to increased gunfire between the factions. Despite the recent deployment of special forces troops, aircraft and heavily armed helicopters, locals remain fearful.
According to the report, Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha said security forces were “preventing some violent acts, but above all they were minimizing the risk to the public.” Still, for security reasons, there were no celebrations for the national holiday and schools were closed for the next two days.
